Medication abortion, also known as the abortion pill, boasts an impressive success rate of nearly 95%. Only a small percentage, around 2-3% of patients, require additional follow-up or intervention due to an incomplete or unsuccessful non-surgical abortion. Is it safe?

However, it’s essential to acknowledge the risks associated with foregoing an ultrasound, as the clinician relies on the last regular menstrual period to determine the gestational age of the pregnancy. Without an ultrasound, there’s a slightly higher risk compared to an abortion performed in a clinical setting. There’s a possibility that the pregnancy may be more advanced than anticipated or that it’s developing abnormally. Additionally, there’s a rare (<2%) but severe risk of an ectopic pregnancy, where the pregnancy grows outside of the uterus.
